Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.
When I was young we would sometimes turn backwards.

Were they posed? Or were they candid? If this was a candid shot, why so many turned around backwards?
[Hard to say almost a hundred years later, but I would imagine someone said something to the effect of "smile for the camera." In any case this would have been a big box camera on a tripod, so they'd have to know they were being photographed. - Dave]
