WASP Training: c. 1943

This is my grandmother in WASP training in Texas. I think it was around 1943. She passed away a couple of weeks ago at 88 years. She kept that adventurous spirit until the end. View full size.

Tribute

What an awesome young woman! Contributing in such a bold and adventurous way, despite all the societal pressure to do something mundane. I can only imagine at the influence she had on those around her. These female aviators were truly pioneers! Thank you for posting the picture, it made my day.

Geronimo! I mean, Geronima!

That is indeed a J-3 Cub, offering 65 horsepower to slip the surly bonds. I know the regs required her to wear that seat pack parachute, but when you fly the J-3 solo, you must sit in the rear seat because of the center of gravity. (The later 90 and 125 hp Super Cubs were flown solo from the front seat.) Although I'm sure jumping from the cramped back seat of a Cub has been done (I used to fly one but never had to leave it before it got back to Earth), I hope your Grandmother ended her career with the number of takeoffs equaling the number of landings. God bless her.

You know, even without the aviator shades Lt. Mike Hunter (q.v.) wears in his pix on Shorpy, she looks just as cool.

By the way, the great pilot Bob Hoover said the Cub was so slow it could only go fast enough to kill you.

A Piper Cub

And that looks like a Piper Cub she posing with. Probably a J-3 Piper.

Thanks

Thank you, sbrooke

For sharing your grandmother's story and spirit with us. To her and so many others of her generation, we owe our freedom. We do well to remember them humbly.

Isn't she lovely!

What a great photo of a young woman not afraid to take on the world. Cool Grandmas are great.

God rest her soul,

she was a fine, brave woman! Thanks for sharing her photo.

Thank you, Grandma!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You were part of the Greatest Generation and made sure the world was safe from Hitler and his stooges. Because your grandmother freed up men to be pilots overseas, the US and its allies defeated the Third Reich

Great photo!

What a wonderful photo! Thanks for sharing it.
