Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Many were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

Christmas is a wonderful time for young children. My daughter and son were 2 and 4 when this was taken in 1956 and it is one of my favorites. The awestruck expression on Janet's face and her brother Roy's sly look of skepticism say it all! View full size.
If it was me, I'd be awestruck by that speaker system. Home stereo was just getting underway in 1957 - was there another one on the other side of the room? Or maybe it's a speaker for an electric organ?
