A challenge to dribbleI can only imagine how difficult it must have been to dribble that ball with the open laces and rough edges. No wonder the scores were low back then.
AmazingAmazing how much taller we have become in 100+ years!!! Love this photo!!!
Charlotte HallI grew up just south of Charlotte Hall (in Mechanicsville) and drive through there every day to get to work. Though he is not listed in the Wikipedia article (perhaps because he attended but did not graduate), Sylvester Stallone is a notable alumnus of the academy, which closed in 1976.
Right across from the academy is Ye Olde Coole Springs, a spring that was supposed to have medical properties. A hospital (possibly America's first sanatorium) was later built nearby (no longer there). The village was at one time called Cool Springs.
Charlotte Hall is still home to an Amish and Mennonite population (as is next-door neighbor Mechanicsville).
Here's some great info on the area from the Maryland Historical Trust, including a modern photo of the building, here.
More of these, please! Also - what is the purpose of the hands on the shoulders? It looks like they're about to conga.
QuakingWonder if the phrase "Charlotte Hall Five" struck fear into the hearts of opponents in 1905. Bet the trash talk was interesting.
Laces on the ballMy great uncle told me how in the "old days" the ball had laces and you had to learn to take that into account when dribbling.
And what's up with the rolled up socks?
1966 was the only time I have been to Savannahand Shorpy's view struck a familiar chord with me and I wondered if this was the neighborhood I had visited 43 years ago when touring the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace. Thanks to Google maps, I discovered the the Low home is only a few hundred yards from this scene.
[You might be just a smidge off course. - Dave]
Surprised.I went to school here. This is facing the main entrance to the campus. The building in the background is the "white house" schoolhouse built in 1803. The newer school building would be to the left in this picture. Behind the photographer was the main building.
This probably was not a yearbook picture. The players would have been in uniform for that. The only one in uniform is the third guy from the front. Orange shirt, orange shorts with black and white trim.

Flat! That pigskin looks like it needs a pump-up.
Dr. DeathThey all look healthy enough. I wonder why the local undertaker was included in the shot.
Charlotte Hall's majordomoI like the Charlie Chaplin lookalike majordomo. I wonder if he was the coach?
Hair hair! That good looking cadet in the front row, second from the left has a luxurious head of thick, curly hair. I wonder if he was able to keep it as he aged. I starting losing mine in college. I hate him.
Taxi SquadI believe some of the lads here are currently vying for a back-up running back spot with the 2010 Washington Redskins. On another note, Sylvester Stallone was a Charlotte Hall cadet circa 1961, although he graduated elsewhere.
Stalwart young menCharlotte Hall Military Academy was one of the oldest schools in Maryland, having been established by an act of the Maryland General Assembly and opening in 1774. The school was located on a 50-acre lot located near the historic Coole Springs of St.Mary's, which provided the water supply for the school and the village of the same name. It looks like the faculty member in this picture might be Professor J.F. Coad, who is described in the school's history as a beloved faculty member and St. Mary's County native. I had the privilege of knowing many people from this fine institution which dissolved in 1976 due to financial difficulties. Now there is a veterans home on the property although two of the historical buildings remain.
LookalikesI see Sean Penn (back row, far right, next to the undertaker), Jude Law (middle row, far left) and Clancy Brown, who played Capt. Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption (back row, far left).

Too Tony for Rocky?Apparently, Stallone (Sylvester) attended in 1961, but didn't graduate.
I've got a thingfor the guy fourth from the left in back. Wowza. Cuuuute.
Another gangAnother bunch of guys hanging around, all dressed pretty much alike, and with baseball bats. Look out !
All the better to hear you with, my dear.I think someone needs to do a study of ears, their size, and how much they stick out. Maybe its just the hairstyles, but these ears are, well, awesome.
That BatSpalding Autograph, with the signature of Frank M. Schulte.
Wildfire! The story on Frank Schulte from "Fifteen Seasons in the Bigs (1904-1918)":
In 1908 he saw Lillian Russell perform in a play called "Wildfire" and thereafter named a trotter he raced in the offseason by the same name. Sportswriters picked it up and started calling Schulte "Wildfire," too. The name stuck and his playing lived up to it. His arm was considered the strongest of the deadball era; he stole home 22 times and his career BA was a decent .270. Wildfire!
Toasty and WarmGotta love those sweaters!
RSVP ASAPThe alumni reunion is this Saturday. However, attendance may be light, as the last cadets graduated almost 35 years ago. http://www.chma.org/
Charlotte Hall, not just a town of sluggers Any observer of today's mass market music (viz., popular with folks under 30) would know that the successful band Good Charlotte hails from near the same part of Maryland, from Waldorf, specifically.
Giants fanThe gent in the back row, second from right, is sporting a New York Giants ballcap. He'll be happy in about a year when the Giants beat the Yankees in the '21 World Series.
Lousy EquipmentAlthough the first baseball gloves were fingerless and had no padding, the gloves and the mitt that are shown are hardly ergonomic and are pathetic even by the standards of my day and certainly by today's standards.
I wonder what professional baseball would look like if the current players were forced to use the equipment shown here.
It probably wouldn't look very impressive for at least a few games.

Cast Party: 1936

February 11, 1936. Washington, D.C. "NO CAPTION (Young man in bed with leg in cast)." Blown up here. Harris & Ewing glass negative. View full size.
Blown UpClick to embiggen. Note the signature of "Oscar Zilch," which seems to have been a sort of generic joke name of the era.

Nifty uniformI take it the young man in uniform is a cadet at Castle Heights Military Academy ("CHMA"?) Apparently it was a going concern from about 1918 to 1986.
[CHMA stands for Charlotte Hall Military Academy, a school in Maryland. - Dave]
Victory MedalThe young man in uniform is wearing what appears to be a Victory Medal for what we now call the First World War. (In 1936 it was the "Great War," or just, "the War.") But he is clearly too young to have served back then. Perhaps it was his father's.
Progress, againIt appears to me that a modern Sharpie is much better suited to write on a plaster cast than a fountain pen.
On the other hand, the docs seem to use those plaster casts less often these days.

Spring TrainingThe faces -- they look just like the kids I've coached.
Nice UniformsThis team's uniforms and equipment are certainly a cut about that of other teams we have seen recently. All very clean and in good repair.
Sign them all upThose lads have a very confident look about them, I think they mean business, yessir.
I hadn't seen lettering done vertically before like that. Very slick.
Flaps extendedApparently at CHMA you could major in "ears."
Catcher's MittWhen I was a tyke back in the '60s, I we had a catcher's mitt like the one shown here. It was my dad's from when he was a kid. He even used it to play catch with me. Sadly it's no longer around.
Were they in the big city?It looks like West Potomac Park.
Right side of the BrainGlad to see that there's at least two southpaws in the bunch.
