Receptacle waitingI like to think that the lone electrical outlet on that pillar in the center of the photo powered a huge Xerox 914 copy machine in the sixties.
Nuts In May     On the far right behind some glass doors I spy my old friend the Card Catalog.
My friend Bob & I plus I imagine a few other young boys would at times scour the drawers for interesting and titillating sounding titles and of course go look at them since we had already seen all the National Geographics.
Another game we played was Blind Draw. Each would randomly open a drawer and and write down the Dewey Decimal Number. If the book was in the stacks you got two points and then the more interesting book would be worth three points. Loser would have to buy the Sno Balls at the corner candy store on the walk home.
One day I hit the jackpot with Nuts In May. A very witty book with one of the premises being the author was interviewed by Dr. Kinsey. Now for a pair of 12 year olds in 1952 that was pure gold.

October 1942. "Colorado School of Mines at Golden. Chemical prospecting for oil becomes more important as the war goes on and the demand for oil increases. Petroleum engineers call chemical prospecting the first scientific approach to the detection of oil in the earth. The big glass condensers, with which these engineering students are working with a professor of geophysics, are used in a soil analysis test. The percentage of wax left as residue at the end of the experiment indicates the nearness of petroleum to the site from which the soil sample was taken." Photo by Andreas Feininger, Office of War Information. View full size.
When I was in college...We would've made one heckuva bong out of that apparatus!
From an old chemist1. The glassware used in the experiment/analysis is very modern for the year: it's 'Standard Taper" so that the students didn't have to fit corks or stoppers into the joints. Mines was an advanced campus then as now.
2. Safety glasses were not offered nor required. Now the students would have face shields as well as other protective gear!
3. As grad students in the 60's, we learned the hard way to wire or clamp the rubber tubing onto the reflux columns and other places where water was used as a coolant. The way we learned is that a poor grad student failed to wire his tubing, and went home for the weekend, leaving his pot boiling. The tubing came off and flooded the lab and the floors below, including the Dept Chair's expensive library. OOPS! (We never heard from that guy again.)

This colorized image shows Mary Texanna Loomis, the first woman in the U.S. to run a radio school, operating her radio station in 1921. Her school, the Loomis Radio College, operated in Washington, D.C., in the 1920's and 1930's. She is seated at an early receiver that uses a panel mounted crystal detector. The knife switches to the right are probably antenna selectors. Next to that is an antenna tuner called a "loose coupler", which is connected to a tube receiver out of view on the right.
I optimized the image in Photoshop and colorized it using AKVIS Coloriage software. The original black and white photo is in the Library of Congress collection and can be seen at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/97504677/. View full size.

Not only that, she has her socks rolled down and almost exposing her trim ankle. Plus she has no coin in her penny loafers to let people know about her love life.

Photo taken on December 12th, 1924 at Edison's laboratories in Llewellyn Park, West Orange, NJ.
Edison honors Mario Carrau, a young inventor from Uruguay, by receiving him on his laboratory.
"After some waiting, his assistant, Mr. Meadowcroft showed me into the library where he introduced me to Mr. Edison. We spoke about helicopters and about the architecture of Latin America and, since the great inventor was totally deaf, his assistant conveyed my words to him. Before I departed, Mr. Edison presented me with an autographed portrait. I asked for permission to see him again on the following day, on which occasion I brought with me my Kodak. I set it up on its tripod, focusing it on Mr. Edison and his assistant, and the latter then exchanged places with me and snapped the pictures setting himself the time of exposition: 4 seconds." (excerpt from Carrau's autobiography)

My mother thought it was funny how my baby brother fell asleep in his stroller, so she posed me with it and took this picture. The date is early 1963, around six months after we moved into our new Princeton, New Jersey house.
Like in Levittown, my family were the original owners, though unlike Levittown, these were custom-built homes. You selected your lot, then selected a blueprint from the library of blueprints that the builder had. The blueprint was just a starting point. You then edited those basic plans. In our case we added footage to the garage to fit our 1960 Edsel, because the garage, as drawn in the plans, was shorter than the car. Closet configurations were another thing my mother totally customized.
The just-completed, though not yet occupied house across the street stands starkly in the background with its not-yet-grown landscape and bare lawn area. As for me, I seem to be stoically putting up with my mother’s photography.”Say cheese” was not a phrase in my family’s vocabulary.
Sleepy brother / sleepy PrincetonBack when it was still pretty rural around those parts...but growing.

Another from the large-format steam library. Central Railroad of New Jersey 903 (ALCO 1923), photographed near the roundhouse at Bethlehem PA in 1948. This Mikado type sports dual air reservoir tanks on the pilot and an oversized Wooten firebox needed for burning anthracite coal. The large tender is not original equipment and only a few CNJ Mikados carried them; I have no idea where it came from. Other railroads were known for ordering switch engines and the like with huge tenders that they would swap out with road power upon delivery. CNJ ordered few if any locomotives after this one was purchased, so I think they might have ordered new tenders from a builder in later years or purchased larger ones from another railroad.
