Colorized from this Shorpy original. I may not achieve the level to Dennis Klassen's Hotel Astor (Colorized): 1909, but I've been inspired by his perfection. I also liked the small details. My favorite here is the African American looking out, from inside the empty dining attachment. The half dozen bicycles, the colored Native American / Eagle friezes, and lots of horse poop; a sign of the times. View full size.

Another photo taken in 1960, when I was 4, with my Kodak box camera. This is looking west on Sparks Street, in Ottawa. You can see the sign for the Hardy Arcade which is now a heritage site. Sadly, it is but a shadow of its former self, having been encased in the new CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp.) building. The camera lasted many years, despite having filled with sand in a very windy day at the beach later that summer. It made a grinding sound when you clicked the trigger but worked just the same.
Again, not a sharp image. View full size

One of a set of three photographs a good friend found for me at a postcard fair.
A party of day trippers visiting Blackpool, Lancashire, in the 1950's. Their coach is a very early Volkswagen de luxe microbus, more commonly called a 'samba' now. Probably imported into the UK in 1954, when production of RHD models started. It is sign written 'Gem Luxury Coaches'.

My brother Iden, sits on the far left of the first row in his 1970 third grade class picture. And though these photos were taken by a professional photographer, I have to question just how professional this one was. I did not cut the identifying sign off in scanning this picture. It was not in the print. View full size.

Art Needle Work Store
... Wikipedia indicates that the Cortecelli Silk company (see sign below Sadie) went out of business in 1930. ( ...

Posted by Mike321 - 03/25/2012 - 8:00pm -

This is the Art Needle Work Store of Sadie Smith, of Mitchell South Dakota. It was located on 307 1/2 Main Street. A Google Map streetview image may or may not show the building, depending on which side of the street it was located.
Sadie (Speicher) Smith (1865-1938) was the second wife of Jacob K. Smith (1851-1934), who was a local real estate dealer and my great-grandfather. They married in December of 1890, he a widower, her first marriage.
The earliest listing for the store appears in 1917 and it may have been operated into the 1930s. The "1917 Mitchell Merchants Association Directory" lists Sadie and her husband at their two addresses.
Last	First Spouse Place of Business / Employment
Smith J K , Mrs Art Needle Work Store, 307 1/2 Main
Smith Jacob K Sadie E real est, 205 N Main
We also see in that directory that Mrs. J.K. Smith (Sadie) was doing well enough to sustain two employees. Two residents of Mitchell list her "Art Needle Work Store" or Mrs. JK Smith as their place of employment or employer.
Judge, George W, Mrs -- art needle work store
Nelson, Anna; -- needle work Mrs J K Smith
Based on the relatively elderly appearance of Sadie (b. 1865 and 55 years old in 1920, 60 years old in 1925) I am guessing that this photograph dates from 1920 at the earliest.
Based on the short hair styles and dress styles I'm going to guess that this is not a post-1929 Depression era image. My understanding is that short bobs and dresses went out of style with the coming of the Depression. Indeed there is no evidence of the existence of the store in the 1930s, although Sadie did later operate a store she called the O.T.O. Art and Baby Shop and also operated a Tea Room in the 1930s.
In addition, Wikipedia indicates that the Cortecelli Silk company (see sign below Sadie) went out of business in 1930. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence,_Massachusetts )
For all of those reasons I choose to label it as "circa 1920s." View full size.

Miss Lorene Swanay's afternoon kindergarten class in California was seemingly a very happy group, with a few glum exceptions. I'm the befuddled lad holding the sign and flanked by the Tipton Twins. It's chilling to read the date on it; one month later the nation suffered a tragedy we were too young to understand. View full size.

Home of Puritan Food Company says the sign. Where this is, I do not know. I have Googled around and found a location in Boston, but the images look NOTHING like what we have here. I will only guess New England since that where 99% of the pictures in the collection were shot. Again from my negatives collection. View full size.
