About the Photos

Our holdings include hundreds of glass and film negatives/transparencies that we've scanned ourselves; in addition, many other photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs) in the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) They are adjusted, restored and reworked by your webmaster in accordance with his aesthetic sensibilities before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here. All of these images (including "derivative works") are protected by copyright laws of the United States and other jurisdictions and may not be sold, reproduced or otherwise used for commercial purposes without permission.

Your Turn: 1941

Your Turn: 1941

Time for our weekly check-in with the girls of Apartment 3G. (Or is it 3X?) Another round of Cokes, and let's get comfortable!

The next entry in a curious set of photos from the Office of War Information archive, taken by Arthur Siegel in the summer of 1941 in Detroit. View full size.

Ah, the unsuspecting, lovely "smoker" on the right clearly doesn't realize that her chair is about to collapse. I looked at the bottom of her chair and became nervous.

The gal on the left

looks better with every installment.
One more button and this could get...interesting.

I'm Convinced Now

Either there is a bottle of rum in the kitchen or Arthur spiked the cokes to relax his subjects.

A tale waiting to be told

Apparently the gal in the middle finds foot odor displeasing, or may be she's done sneezing?

I keep waiting for Peter Lorre to creep into the scene with Sydney Greenstreet close behind.
