There was nothing second rate about black medical schools. Admission was very competitive.
The best family doctor we ever had in the 40's and 1950's was a graduate of Howard University in the days of segregation and black universities.
The late Dr. Charles Lewis of Uniontown PA was reknowned for his excellence in his mostly white "coal patch" town. His wife, Bessie, was his nurse.
