The sleeveless vest/aprons were called Cobbler's Smocks.
There was a half-sleeve version called an Artist's Smock.
These are very much still available and still useful for their original purpose of protecting your clothes and providing "extra" pockets to carry tools and supplies.

What were those garments called that ladies of the '50s wore, like your lovely wife has on?
For lack of a better term, upper body aprons? Was it a cooking smock? I was but a wee lad in the late '50s, but I recall my Mom had something similar, with all those homey kitchen thingies on them.
