License Plates

Nice colorization! I wondered this when I first saw this photo in b&w...why do used cars on a used car lot have license plates on them? The dealer usually keeps a "dealer plate" or two in his desk drawer to use when taking the car out for a test drive; even back in the 40s.

Thanks tterrace...okay! Now I remember that it's a big deal when vintage car owners mention a "black plate" California car.
