"McCrory fire, 11/21/29." Washington, D.C., firefighters at the McCrory five-and-dime on Seventh Street N.W., after a lunchtime boiler explosion in the store's basement -- a disaster whose final toll was six dead and dozens injured. 4x5 inch glass negative. View full size.
Today, the area most crowded with fire chiefs and hoses is occupied by outdoor seating for my favorite Peruvian restaurant.
This mishap happened shortly after the Wall Street crash of 1929. Looks like the huge crowd in the background wasn't interested in the explosion, but were standing in line to get their money out of the Peoples Bank.
[That's not a bank -- it's a Peoples Drug Store. - Dave]
You are, of course correct Dave. The name looked like "Bank" but on further study, it indeed is "Drug".
Didn't even make this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_boiler_explosions
