July 1942. "Hoffman Island, merchant marine training center off Staten Island, New York. Class in artificial respiration." Acetate negative by John Vachon. View full size.
Mast Magazine's March 1944 article about Hoffman Island:
Merchant Marines who have taken their cigarettes out of their shirt pocket before lying face down on the concrete. Another three have placed their "Dixie cup" caps to the side, presumably to cover their cigarettes. Yes, they want someone to save their life ... but they also want a smoke afterward, not from a crushed cigarette.
The habitual look-up-the-Shorpy-subject-on-Wikipedia reveals some quirky fun, after the Hoffman Island structures were razed in 1961:
"In 1965 on Hoffman Island, eleven people, including the filmmaker Leon Gast, were arrested on charges including trespassing and indecent exposure for their roles in creating a Nudie film on the island."
Capital "n" for the genre!
