Of all the Shorpy pics I've seen, I think this one is my favorite. There are so many sweet faces, and so many smiles. I feel like if I am ever feeling down I will just need to go back to the link to this page.
Certainly, this is a whites-only classroom. Would be interested to see the classroom for Black kids, if there even was one.
The young man to the right of the teacher looks very happy with his edition of "America on Guard" complete with facts about our Armed Forces. There are plenty of copies available today on Amazon and eBay for a decent price!
By that age, about a fifth of the kids in my class were wearing specs.
The overalls, gingham, bare feet, big smiles: all wonderful. How old are these kids? 10, 11, 12? Even if born in 1930, some would still be alive today. I will express an oft-repeated sentiment here on Shorpy: I wish someone would write in to say, That’s me!
