Deadeye Jean: 1939

April 6, 1939. "Co-ed queen of rifle shooters. Jean Yocum, George Washington University co-ed, has won the Women's Individual Intercollegiate Rifle Championship, according to the National Rifle Association. Her score of 496 out of a possible 500 gave the individual title to a G.W. girl for the first time since 1929. Although this is only Miss Yocum's second year of shooting, she has maintained an average of 99 out of a possible 100 in all matches." View full size.

Today’s Top 5

M1922

That looks like a Springfield M1922 target rifle; finely made, fairly rare, and a tack driver, to boot. The rifle shown in the photo would doubtless fetch something north of $1,000 on today's market.

Obits

Stumbled on a bio in Botanical Garden Press, NY, 1999:

Jack R. Harlan, PhD, was born June 7, 1917, and died August 26, 1998. His wife, Mary Jean (Yocum) Harlan, died on October 11, 1982, in Urbana, IL. They had four children: Sue, Harry, Sherry, and Richard.

Straighten Up Recruit

My drill sergeant would have told her: "Don't close your eyes when you shoot!"

World's most dangerous combination

Cleavage and a gun.

Sorority fever

My sister is a Sigma Kappa, but from Virginia Tech. And my sister does not shoot rifles! I think she'd be more interesting if she did.

Don't need Daddy

"Marry me or else!"

Could be true love

There is something about a lacquered nail on a rifle trigger that does it for me.

[Evidently. - Dave]

She married a marksman

From the Connellsville, Pennsylvania, Daily Courier. June 1, 1939:

Dr. and Mrs. Edwin L. Yocum of Washington, D.C., announce he engagement of their daughter, Mary Jean Yocum, to Jack R. Harlan, Berkeley, Cal, son of Dr. and Mrs. Harlan of Washington, D.C. The wedding will be a summer event.

Miss Yocum, a student at George Washington University,
Washington, was recently tapped for the mortar board in recognition of her services on the women's varsity rifle team, on the W.A.A. board as hockey manager and on the glee club. She is a member at the Sigma Kappa Sorority. In her freshman year she received the Beta Phi Alpha zoology award and in her sophomore year she received the mortarboard award for the outstanding sophomore woman. In addition, she recently captured the national collegiate rifle championship.

She is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wiiliam J. Hicks of
112 Trace street. Her mother will be remembered as Miss Mildred Hicks of Connellsville.

Mr. Harlan was graduated from George Washington University, having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He is a member of Sigma Xi and captained the men's championship rifle team last year.
