Elephants pose for a photo with their trainer before going into the circus arena near downtown Buffalo back in the 1930s. View full size.
Location of PhotoBased on earlier photos of the same event, the circus was no doubt housed in the old Broadway Auditorium at Broadway and Potter (now Nash). From a comparison of the location and layout of the houses to the 1894 Buffalo Atlas here.
I believe the houses in the background are 36 through 48 Potter (now Nash) street.

A post office in Idaho after the turn of the century (1920s). The town doesn't exist now. This is a card in a relative's photo collection from one of their friends.
Three Creek ranchThere are two Three Creek (and not Creak, according to the sign of the building) ranches in Wyoming. One near Jackson Hole, and another, in Johnson county, 15 miles south of Buffalo. It's more likely to be the place.
Three Creek PostofficeI found a fellow that told me where it was. It is in Idaho and the remains still exist. I will have to locate the e-mail with his information and post it later.

Some elephants have a chat with their trainer before entering the circus arena. I've been told that this may be Nash St. just off of Broadway near downtown Buffalo in the 1930s. Just above the large elephant's back you can see a sign that reads "Buffalo's Best Cup of Coffee." This was the slogan of the Deco Restaurant chain that I remember from when I was a kid in the early 1960s. View full size.

Toledo, OH (approx 1924) - It's been at least a dozen years since "Christmas in Buffalo: c. 1910." My Grandparents (Albert and Hedwig Happel) have had five children and buried the two oldest. In addition to the tinsel laden tree we see the doll house that my Grandfather built for his two daughters (Emily seated and Lee snuggling with her mother). Their older brother Hermann stands behind the doll house.
Many years later my father (Anton, born several years after this photo was taken) renovated the doll house for his daughters. It is currently in storage in my basement awaiting the day that I or my son renovate it so that another generation can play with it. View full size.

The Midland Kingwas the second "upper laker" built for the Canadian Great Lakes grain trade, too large to navigate the old Welland and St. Lawrence canals. Launched 19 August 1903 by the Collingwood Shipbuilding Company, Ltd., at Collingwood, Ontario, for the Midland Navigation Company, Ltd., it delivered grain from the Canadian lakehead, the twin ports of Fort William and Port Arthur, to Port Colborne, Ontario, or Buffalo, for transshipment to smaller vessels that would bring the grain to Montreal for export, or to Erie Canal barges or eastern railroad connections. On its return trips it carried coal, especially to fuel the Canadian Pacific and, after 1918, Canadian National, the railroads that brought the grain to the lakehead. It is receiving such a cargo in this photograph. The vessel was scrapped at Hamilton, Ontario, in 1937.

My ex-husband's grandmother, Charlotte Edith Anderson Monture, in her AEF Red Cross nurse's uniform. "Andy" served in France during WWI. Although she was a Mohawk from the Six Nations Reserve, in Southern Ontario, she served with the American Forces. She was the first Native woman in Canada to be trained as a nurse. However, because of racial attitudes in the day, no hospital in Canada would train an "Indian". She applied and was accepted at the New Rochelle Hospital, in New York, and trained there as a nurse, becoming a school nurse. When the Americans joined the War, she signed up, too. She served at Buffalo Base Hospital 23, in Vittelles, France. She returned home to Six Nations after the war, serving her people as a nurse until 1955. She died just short of her 106th birthday, in 1996. It was a privilege to have known her. (As a side note, she had the opportunity to dance with Eddie Rickenbacker when he visited the hospital. She said he was "a bit full of himself"...) View full size.

My father, age 17, training aboard the light cruiser USS Little Rock as a member of the Naval Reserve, in 1947. The photo was taken by a shipmate somewhere between Newport RI and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He eventually transferred to the army, he now admits, because the "crackerjack" uniform he is wearing in the photo made him feel like a kid in his jammies. That, and an opportunity to enter Officers Candidate School. But mostly the jammies thing. View full size.

My sister and brother in a 1949 photo, on Second Avenue in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Not many years later, at 16, I demolished this Buick (and please take notes if you'd like to demolish a Buick) skidding on wet streetcar tracks -- too much speed might have been involved -- and nailing a brick porch next door to Sacred Heart Convent on Sixth Avenue. A woman appeared (the Madonna?), shouting "You've wrecked!" and because a few more bricks were thudding onto the hood, I said, "I believe I'm still wrecking." View full size.
Small WorldIndeed! Altoona was my mom's hometown when her family came to the United States (my granddad had a job with the Pennsy Railroad) before she moved to Buffalo to study nursing. Both my aunts and their husbands were buried out of Sacred Heart and one of them (and my grandparents) lived in a house on 2nd Avenue.
I was going to say that in addition to speed and trolley tracks, the hills in that burg might have contributed to your wreck as well (Altoona had some GREAT sledding hills in the winter) but a quick look at the Google street view disabused me of that notion.

American DreamWhat a handsome family. I'm curious as to what your grandfather did for a living. They look rather prosperous. But then that's why he came to America - to achieve the American Dream.

Another of my father's 1957 Kodachromes. Taken in my grandparents' yard, Hamburg, New York (south of Buffalo). My grandfather owned a lot of land and had to mow a huge yard--hence the impressive mowing machine. Behind the badminton area is the clay tennis court, and behind that, the "rock garden" with a Japanese maple. Summer picnics there were an event. View full size.

My Mother's family, Buffalo, 1946. Mom seated center.
Not long after this photo my Aunt, sitting on my grandfather's lap, would be stricken with Polio. She fought her whole life to be "normal" and to be treated with respect. She passed away this past summer. View full size.
She'll be needing that bright smileHow cruelly ironic that your aunt, the child with the biggest smile, would be so terribly afflicted. Her eyes convey a bravery which, from your writing, apparently served her well. She must have been possessed of a great heart.
