Every Summer there is an Italian food festival on 9th Avenue in New York City. The crowd of people visiting the festival is enormous. These two people reside on 9th Avenue and were watching the events. The lady tried to inform the man of a particular event, but the man did not hear; possibly because he had a hearing aid in his right ear. Taken in 1952. View full size.

Cheboygan, Michigan, circa 1907. The man at far right we believe to be Julius B. Lund (1849-1912) founder of J. B. Lund & Sons machine shop, foundry, and shipyard. Our best guess is that the building is the old water works, and that the picture was taken because the Lunds did some work for the City of Cheboygan's water plant. The building that occupied the Lund machine shop, later operated by the Lund sons & grandsons is still standing, on Cleveland St. with frontage on the Cheboygan River. They also operated a marina for several years at this site. If anyone can offer any suggestions, clarifications or corrections, please do, and accept my undying gratitude! View full size.

Father's First Car: 1951

This photo, taken by my mother in 1951, shows my father with his first car: a 1950 Studebaker Champion 4 door sedan. He dated my mother in that car. They were married in October 1951, and he traded that car in on a 1952 Commander in the spring of '52. So they only had this car as newlyweds.
The reason my father bought a Studebaker was that he had come from New York City where nobody in his family had ever owned a car, or even had a license to drive one. The Studebaker dealer offered to give him driving lessons, and take him to the DMV to get a license, included in the price of that car. So a sale was made. By all reports the car was a dog - under-powered and under-braked, which is why he did not keep it long. It had a manual transmission, and if anyone ever waxed it, there is no evidence of that in this shot.
Buildings in the background are the New Brunswick New Jersey garden apartments where they lived until 1953.

Lemon H. Wiley, band leader and principal musician of the 77th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (M539 ROLL 98), Aug. 15, 1862. He was promoted to Principal Musician June 29, 1864, Elmwood, IL (CdV).
From "Peoria City and County, Illinois: A Record of Settlement, Organization, Progress and Achievement, Volume 2" by James Montgomery Rice, Pub. S. J. Clarke, 1912.
LEMON HILL WILEY
There are many interesting incidents in the life record of Lemon Hill Wiley covering a long experience as a soldier of the Civil war, as a musician in connection with bands and orchestras and later as a political leader, in which connection he has done important public service. He was born in Carmichaels, Greene County, Pennsylvania, April 17, 1844. His father, also a native of that place, was a blacksmith and wagon maker by trade. In early life he was elected justice of the peace and thereafter to the end of his days at each regular election was the candidate of both the Whig and democratic parties. He became widely known as Squire Wiley and his record, uniformly characterized by justice and equity, won him the high commendation of the public. He died in 1882 and in the same decade his wife, who bore the maiden name of -May Jackson, passed away. She was bom in Greene County, near Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, and their children were Jackson, William, Lemon H., Elizabeth, Margaret, Mardelia and two who died in infancy.
Lemon H. Wiley attended the country schools, in which he acquainted himself with the usual branches of learning that constituted the public-school curriculum. He was too much of a musician, however, to make a good blacksmith, although he entered his father’s shop and attempted to learn the trade. He would whistle while he was pounding the hot iron and the nails which he was attempting to draw, for so the process was termed, would grow cold. At length his father said: “You are no blacksmith. I will make of you a musician." Nothing could have better suited the lad and for years his developing musical talent kept him in a foremost position among musical leaders of this and other states ...

This is my great-grandmother, Elise Hindermann Fallon in Mexico in 1941. She was going to see a special production of Wagner's Ring Cycle and had a car and driver take her and a friend from New Orleans to Mexico City. At one point, they were chased by bandits on horseback. She was a bit of a pistol (she eloped with my great-grandfather).

According to notes in the album this is the automobile race winner at Brighton Beach, NY, August 8, 1907.
From Robert Dick: I would say he looks like Fiat driver Emanuele Cedrino.
From Don Capps: The winner of the Brighton Beach 24 Hour event was Montague Roberts with William McLivrid using a Thomas 60 HP.
There were several crashes and as a result there was one death and a number of injuries to the crews and spectators.
This was an eBay find with pages from an album that also contains photos of the New York Skyline, Atlantic City beach, and (I think) the Iron Pier.

Unfortunately, the City of Dearborn covered up many of its downtown buildings with modern facades in the 1980s, thereby obliterating their architectural beauty.

On a visit to New Orleans in May 1976, I stayed at the Hummingbird Hotel, which was like a scene from "A Streetcar Named Desire." The window at the front of the room looked out onto St. Charles Street, and every so often a streetcar would roll by. On a warm, humid night, the open windows of the streetcar afforded a cooling breeze and a great view of the City. And they still do on the St. Charles line. View full size.

I love the smell of model aeroplane fuel in the morning. 1969, me holding my brother's latest creation, a model of a Japanese Kawasaki fighter, I believe, a fly-by-wire, silk and balsa wood model powered by a Enya motor. I often went to the city with my brother to Hobbyco to buy parts and wonder at the miniature marvels on display. This plane met its demise in a loop the loop that ended with the plane losing the undercarriage and suffering wing damage. My brother still has the motor, which powered a few more planes during his youth.

Posted by citybeautiful - 11/16/2012 - 9:21pm -

We think this is a portrait our great aunt and uncle during WW2/Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. We don't know the city or any circumstances. The lady was my grandmother's sister. At this time we think they lived in Beijing. We also are debating the rank insignia: the lack of contrast between the triangle on the collar and the field color of the insignia makes me think it might be Maj. General in the Chinese National Revolutionary Army (Chiang Kai Shek). This would fit other photos of him where he appears to be wearing bars for Colonel. Of course, in black and white it is hard to tell and for all I know it could be private. Many of our photos show the couple mingling with US Army staff, which is in keeping with the fact that our grandfather was assigned to General Marshall's Peace HQ in China. We have more questions than answers, unfortunately. View full size.
