Some more informationHere is some more info on the house and its architect. Before I read that I was going to just comment that this looks to me like a mid-century modern designed and built on a budget. I think that it was quite successful. I guess there are some differing options noted in the link. I like this house, with its new additions, very much.

My mother and birth father on their wedding day, June 1953, at City Hall, in New York City. As Mom was living in Canada and there was a Dominion-wide holiday for the Queen's coronation, she was able to travel to New York where my father was living to get married.
Dad was an artist living in Greenwich Village at the time. The next day, they packed all his belongings and he came up to Canada. He died in 1988, a month to the day before my step-dad died.

Street accident units?I minored in Emergency Health Services in college and somehow never heard anything about street accident units or anything similar during WWII. Can't find anything meaningful about them online either. Seems like one of the many forgotten stories from the homefront efforts in the war.
Blackouts = AccidentsI don't know how prevalent they were, but they were definitely needed in many areas owing to the blackout regulations in the early part of the war. Imagine driving in Manhattan traffic with no streetlights, all buildings dark, and it being illegal to turn on your headlights.

Prestige over efficiency It looks like the skinny tower part is more for height and prestige than practicality and business efficiency. They could have gotten more useful floor space per dollar building fewer but wider floors. Inadequate space per floor is what doomed the Singer Building.
Like ClockworkThere appears to be scaffolding of some sort across the clocks. It's too early in the 20th Century for a Daylight Savings Time change. Perhaps some other sort of timepiece maintenance is happening. Too bad we can't see the clocks on the south and east sides of the building.

Excelsior!Yes, it means "ever upward" and is the motto of New York State. It is also the name of all the "wood wool" or wood shavings which were used before little vinyl airbags and styrofoam were the choices for packing material. Not only was it a fire hazard, but heavier and more costly than today's packing filler. They still do use it though not too often and most people recycled it, as they did with the baskets instead of cardboard boxes. Very industrious people pictured here but inventory control must have been a mess.

In 1960 my father, working for the USDA on Long Island, New York, was looking through a dump one day and found this fat packet of old film negatives. He brought them home with him and kept them in a box.
They are 3.5 inch square film negatives. Some had writing on their paper sleeves, and it is from this that I determined the place and time. Most of the images appear to be from Malone, New York. This photo was labeled "Irene and Florence." View full size.

Before cell phones and textingMy one cousin is mostly deaf and had something similar hooked up to their phone while he was growing up from the phone company I believe. I'm sure the operator had a fair amount of amusement from his conversations being the go-between.
teletype? Both of my parents were deaf. Growing up in the (pre texting and Skype) 70's my parents and most deaf folks used government surplus teletype machines communicate with friends and family on the phone. I didn't know of anyone in my parents circle who didn't have one. Every one knew of someone who squirreled away parts for these loud, rumbly and gigantic beasts who repaired them in the basement . Are these things the same machines? They look much smaller than i remember.
