C&O 310, class L2a 4-6-4 Hudson type on ready track at Cincinnati Union Terminal service area, September 1950. Built by Baldwin in 1948, the L2a's were the world's largest Hudson types, dwarfing those of the New York Central and weighing in slightly heavier than those of AT&SF. They featured Franklin type B rotary cam poppet valves and 78" drivers. All were assigned to mainline passenger work on C&O's flatter western main lines, working between Cincinnati/Detroit and Hinton, WV. E-8 diesels bumped the Hudsons from passenger service in 1952 and all were out of service the following year. All were scrapped by 1955. View full size.

According to notes in the album this is the automobile race winner at Brighton Beach, NY, August 8, 1907.
From Robert Dick: I would say he looks like Fiat driver Emanuele Cedrino.
From Don Capps: The winner of the Brighton Beach 24 Hour event was Montague Roberts with William McLivrid using a Thomas 60 HP.
There were several crashes and as a result there was one death and a number of injuries to the crews and spectators.
This was an eBay find with pages from an album that also contains photos of the New York Skyline, Atlantic City beach, and (I think) the Iron Pier.

The Fallsview Bridge spanned the Niagara River below the falls between Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York (seen here). During the especially harsh winter of 1938, large quantities of Lake Erie ice were swept down the river, building up in the gorge below the falls, On January 27, the pressure of the ice on the bridge abutments caused a catastrophic failure of the structure. While the lady of the house was well-dressed in most of the photos, she was also a housewife. Here she is doing the laundry with a smile. It's easy to forget that this was the way it was done back then. The watch must have been important to her, because she is wearing it in most of the pictures, even here, with soap suds halfway up her arms. From the collection of film and 4x5 glass negatives I recently purchased. We would love to find out more about this family; they evidently lived somewhere in Central New York, so their relatives could be our neighbors. View full size.

1979, Central Park, New York City
Alicia, one of my neighbors from when I lived on E. 83rd Street in Manhattan, appears to give me the stink-eye. She had her head turned to her right, in profile to the camera, and that's what I intended to photograph, but at the moment my shutter clicked, she turned back towards me and squinted in the afternoon sun.
It was a pleasant Spring weekend afternoon, and Alicia and I decided to walk the few blocks west to Central Park for some photography. Here we stopped at "Cleopatra's Needle," the 3450-year-old Egyptian obelisk near the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In those pre-Giuliani/Bloomberg days, graffitist felt free to deface anything, even an ancient relic like this one, and once attacked, it would remain that way - or worse - from then on. Most of the landmarks in the Park suffered a similar fate and were in various states of decrepitude.
Thanks to the non-profit Central Park Conservancy and better law enforcement, the Park looks amazing, and we haven't seen this kind of vandalism in more than two decades. View full size.

From the collection of film and 4x5 glass negatives I recently purchased; they seem to be circa 1912, taken in upstate New York. This is one of my favorites. The love and pride are evident. It occurred to me, looking at this, was that this child is a contemporary of my father, who was born in 1908 and died three months after his 91st birthday in 2000, and I wondered about his life in that context. It would be nice to have answers. View full size.
