Colorized with GIMP software. I never noticed the leaf or little blades of grass until I had to colorize them. One gentleman (second from right) has a cut on his finger. Also, I made everyone's suit is a different color blue. Hope you enjoy.

This is a picture of the SS France (French Line) my father took prior to our family boarding the ship at Pier 88, New York for a European trip in the summer of 1963. We were on our way to visit family in both England and France. They don’t build them like that anymore, that includes the cars in the foreground. This is Frances Modelle. We believed she lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and was a Gimbalette. This GE light bulb photo was taken in the early 1960s. We have found more photos of her, and would like to get them to her or her relatives.
Does anyone have any ideas where this lady might be today? Thank you, in advance! View full size.

My paternal grandparents, Harvey and Grace Duryée, made a trip around the Southwestern US in 1930. They moved to California from New York in the late 1800's and settled in Los Angeles. Harvey had been in real estate, and this trip took place after he was retired.
Old Oraibi, located in Northeastern Arizona, was settled before 1100 AD, so it's one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America.
The current residents of Old Oraibi allow visitors but do not allow photography, so there are no pictures available of what the settlement looks like today. My favorite part of the photo is the woman standing in the doorway just peeking around the corner, presumably at my grandmother who took the picture. The caption "Old Oraibi - Hopi Indian Reservation, 1930" is written on the back of the photo in pencil in Grace's hand. View full size.

At some point Benny sent for his younger brother Issar to join him in America. Together they formed the Weinstein Brothers Cloak and Suits. Paterson, NJ, Passaic Falls, circa 1905. In 1907 my grandfather Hijme Stoffels emigrated from the Netherlands to the USA, where he lived in New York. Since his first wife couldn't accommodate there, she returned to the Netherlands in 1907, followed by my grandfather in 1908.
My grandfather had many relatives living in Paterson, NJ, which made him visit there often. When he returned to the Netherlands, he brought this picture along. I don't believe he was the photographer himself, since I never heard of him making any photograph, but maybe one of his family members made the picture. View full size.

Taken in the 1960s, the hippy era. In New York City the young hippys gathered in parks like Central Park. The music and singing were joyous. It was the time where anyone over the age of 30 was dismissed as being too old to matter This picture symbolizes some of the spirit of that time.

This is the USS Colorado going under the Brooklyn Bridge. While doing some research I found that while on the way to Panama, there was a fire and the ship had to go to New York to be repaired. Perhaps this shot was from that famous time. The photo says it was taken in 1929, the time my great-great uncle was aboard the ship.

It's December 2, 1944, and my wife's Aunt Vicki, second on the left, and her girl friends (you could call women "girls" back then and get away with it) are celebrating something at the Iceland Restaurant, 1600 Broadway in New York. "Dining - Dancing - 3 Shows Nightly." The absence of men (I see just two on the dance floor) illustrates that about 13 million of them were serving in the military.
I know Aunt Vicki was writing to a sailor somewhere among those 13 million. My guess is the young lady on the left was the reason for the night out -- possibly for an engagement party -- because it appears she has slipped out of the chair closest to the camera to pose so sweetly for the shooter from Planetary Photo, 311 W. 34th St (printed on back of the one dollar photo). Also some of her friends are focusing on her. I'm happy to say today, at 89, Aunt Vicki is thriving in Delaware, has a good sense of humor and a generous nature as great as always. View full size.

Every Summer there is an Italian food festival on 9th Avenue in New York City. The crowd of people visiting the festival is enormous. These two people reside on 9th Avenue and were watching the events. The lady tried to inform the man of a particular event, but the man did not hear; possibly because he had a hearing aid in his right ear. Taken in 1952. View full size.

Posted by aenthal - 08/09/2013 - 6:39pm -

This photo, taken by my mother in 1951, shows my father with his first car: a 1950 Studebaker Champion 4 door sedan. He dated my mother in that car. They were married in October 1951, and he traded that car in on a 1952 Commander in the spring of '52. So they only had this car as newlyweds.
The reason my father bought a Studebaker was that he had come from New York City where nobody in his family had ever owned a car, or even had a license to drive one. The Studebaker dealer offered to give him driving lessons, and take him to the DMV to get a license, included in the price of that car. So a sale was made. By all reports the car was a dog - under-powered and under-braked, which is why he did not keep it long. It had a manual transmission, and if anyone ever waxed it, there is no evidence of that in this shot.
Buildings in the background are the New Brunswick New Jersey garden apartments where they lived until 1953.
