Somewhere in this photo of the process of building the highway around the face of Storm King Mountain in about 1912, is my dad's teenage half uncle, Clayton C. MacNeal. Once part of US Highway 9-W linking West Point to Cornwall-on-Hudson New York, it is now called NY 218, and driving it today is a rather thrilling experience, but the views of the Mid-Hudson River valley from there are as spectacular as ever. I love this one. This is my Dad's (on the left) first night on the town in the states after more than three years fighting with the 27th ID in the Pacific, around October 1945, near Seattle. He arrived in Washington state from Japan that day after being part of the first occupational forces. These guys are happy to be back! View full size.
Dad and his buddiesCazzorla's Dad and his buds are giving up a few details about themselves. Dad is an infantry lieutenant and has the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. In 1947 all recipients of the CIB were retroactively awarded the Bronze Star Medal; many former infantrymen never got the word or were too busy creating new lives to care about it, but I hope your dad received his.
The man in the dark shirt has no insignia, but that is an officer's shirt. Next we have an officer from the Quartermaster Corps. On the right is what appears to be a captain in the Ordnance Corps; his ribbons are indistinct. His 27th Infantry Division patch is clearly visible; a New York National Guard division, the division participated in the invasions of the Gilbert Islands, Saipan, and Okinawa, then were part of the Occupation forces.
The Shasta Cola bottles, assortment of glasses, two ice buckets, and the packs of Camels and Luckies suggest they've been celebrating for a while. After what they went through they deserved a party.

Downtown Holliston, Massachusetts, as it appeared in 1880. This building, the "Andrews Block", was constructed sometime in the 1860s, and served as the hub for this once-proud shoe-making town's commercial district. However, on December 28, 1898, tragedy struck when it and several other buildings were razed by fire.
Two years later it was replaced with its modern counterpart, the Cerel Building, which stands today, still housing one of the older buildings tenants. The "J.F. Fiske" shop (seen on the left) is still in businesss today as Fiske's General Store, and has been operating in the town nearly-continuously since 1863.
This photograph was taken from a limitedly printed viewbook compiled by the Lithotype Printing Company in New York, and distributed in the town around the year 1880. View full size.

Taken about 1902: The Foley Family poses outside their log home, built circa 1847, located on Keenan Road in the Helena area of upper New York State, Saint Lawrence County.
Standing (left to right): Herbert John Foley (born Jan 26, 1892), Herb's mother, Aunt Kate McCarthy, Miss Hurley (a dressmaker who helped get everyone ready for the picture), Herb's brother Jim and his brother Bernard
Seated: John Henry Foley (Herb's father), brother Tom seated on his knee (whose name was changed to Fr. Bernard when he was ordained a priest), sister Anne (on stool), Herb's Grandmother Foley whose husband Dennis came to this country from Ireland with his father Dennis, and his brothers, Patrick and Jeremiah.
Herb is my grandfather. It's odd that his mother isn't even mentioned by name and yet both the aunt and the dressmaker are named. I guess not too many people smiled for pictures back then!

Posted by microanne - 03/07/2011 - 10:15am -

"Silhouette" was designed and built by my Dad from 1946-1948. At the time, he was vice president of New York Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden, New Jersey. This was the third boat he built for personal use. The other two were wooden Class sloops: "Patsy Anne", an 18' Seagull, #216 and "Patsy Anne II" a 19' Lightning, #1004. "Silhouette" was a monumental undertaking because it was a 40' all welded, steel hull, beautifully crafted pleasure yawl with a hydraulic lift centerboard. She was unique, one of a kind. He never built another and finally sold her in 1962. The couple who purchased the boat cruised the East coast, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Portugal, France and Gibraltar. They published very descriptive articles in Motor Boating and Sail attesting to the superiority of Silhouette's sea-worthiness. Dad died in 1986, but I'm certain he would be happy to know that "Silhouette" is still going strong and now makes her home in Uruguay, South America. View full size.
