Turn-of-the-Century picture from an old family photo album, probably taken in Washington, D.C. Can anyone identify the flag on the wall? View full size.
That FlagThat's a yacht flag used by the Navy until 1916. More info here http://www.fotw.net/flags/us~yte.html
Yacht EnsignThe flag in question is the U.S. Yacht Ensign, still in use today although its status has changed somewhat. First authorized in 1848, the flag was intended to be a signal (not an ensign) hoisted by licensed private yachts that did not carry cargo when entering a port to indicate there was no need for reporting to the customs inspector of that port. By about 1920 or so it was no longer being used for that purpose and it had become an alternate US Ensign for yachts, the function it still is used for today.

July 1924. "A new use for discarded automobile horns has been discovered by Dr. William C. Fowler, health officer of Washington, D.C. Dr. Fowler has adapted an old rams-horn type auto horn, a relic of the days when they blew them with bulbs, and fitted it to his radio to serve as a loudspeaker. This gives as good a tone as any he could buy, he says." This photo of Dr. Fowler tuning a Freed-Eisemann Neutrodyne receiver clears up the minor mystery of who this is. Circa 1905. "The Capitol at Washington -- East Front." The Senate wing is closest to the camera, with Thomas Crawford's sculpture The Progress of Civilization decorating the pediment atop the portico; the House of Representatives pediment at far left is blank; it would eventually be filled by Paul Bartlett's sculpture Apotheosis of Democracy, dedicated in 1916. 8x10 glass negative. Those steps will always remember themYears ago my wife and I visited DC. Sat down on those steps to take a breather. Got up took off and wife left her purse on the those steps.
Amazingly enough. When she discovered her mistake roughly 20 minutes later we hustled back. Bag was still there same spot untouched. Before Paranoid days began.
As seen on money...That perspective of the capitol has drawn artists and photographers for generations. Here it is on a $2 bill of the Series of 1917. Despite the date appearing on it, the note was printed sometime 1923-27, as determined by the concurrent terms of the two signers.

This colorized image shows Mary Texanna Loomis, the first woman in the U.S. to run a radio school, operating her radio station in 1921. Her school, the Loomis Radio College, operated in Washington, D.C., in the 1920's and 1930's. She is seated at an early receiver that uses a panel mounted crystal detector. The knife switches to the right are probably antenna selectors. Next to that is an antenna tuner called a "loose coupler", which is connected to a tube receiver out of view on the right.
I optimized the image in Photoshop and colorized it using AKVIS Coloriage software. The original black and white photo is in the Library of Congress collection and can be seen at http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/97504677/. View full size.
