Jerry Lewis performed often at the Chez Paree night club in downtown Chicago. He and my dad Mel soon became good friends. One day in 1946 Jerry visited Shutan Camera Co. to buy his very first movie camera for an important occasion: the birth of his first child Gary. That purchase may have spawned Jerry’s love for film making. This mid-1940s photo shows him in our Washington Street store with arm around manager Irving Kaye, Shutan employee Manny Reeder, and Mel Shutan on the far right. Jerry and my dad were both in their early 20s. Jerry Lewis became a family friend and continued to buy camera equipment from Shutan thru the 1990s. Leica and Nikon were always his choice in 35mm equipment. View full size.

This is me, Edward Mitchell, in 1955 on the front porch of my paternal grandfather's home on South Third St. in Waco, Texas. Left to right is George Washington Mitchell, 88, who became a widower in 1954 after over 60 years of marriage. These are three of his five sons, not including my father who is in the house and the middle son Ross who died in 1952 at 52. Lloyd, 48, high school teacher and football coach, Arthur, 61, Ford dealer since 1925, and Ralph, 51, Inspector for Texas Dept. of Health. Granddaddy had a massive heart attack in summer of '54 and lingered at the point of death for three weeks. He then recovered, went back home and lived to be 93. I spent virtually every Saturday night with him between '55 and '61 when the man my mother and aunt hired to live with him left for the weekend. We'd watch Gunsmoke, People Are Funny, Lawrence Welk and Groucho Marx on his metal '54 Firestone TV. I'd play his Victrola and he'd tap his cane in time to the music. I'm retired after working 30 years in the oil and gas industry. View full size.

I have often referred to my mother working and living in Washington, D.C. during the war in my comments on the many great photos Shorpy posts from that era. She was from Ohio but moved to D.C. to work for the CAA (Civil Aeronautics Authority) which was the forerunner of today's FAA. I found this picture of her in her office from 1943 and thought it would fit right in here. She would have turned 100 this year, so she is 25 in this picture. View full size.
