Colorized version of this image showing "children in hospital bed with dolls." Washington, D.C., 1931. Harris & Ewing glass negative.
This is what children did before computers, cell phones and social media. We may have made great gains in technology, but in my opinion, we lost a lot.
Precious!I love her upside-down smile. She seems a bit shy and not sure if she wants her picture taken. Her friend is more than willing to sit on a 'girls bed with a bunch of dolls' for the chance to have his picture taken. Imagine what a hospital children's ward was like back in the day.

c1930s. A storefront window display of Shutan Camera Co. on West Washington Street in downtown Chicago. My grandfather Edwin Shutan offered a large selection of quality Christmas cards and fine writing instruments - and always arranged the displays meticulously. View full size.
They Say MoreI love the logic: not only should you say it with Shutan's Christmas cards, but you should do it because they say more. Than what? Other cards? Or not using cards at all? (Maybe I'm over-thinking it, but I still love that message.)
As for the pen-and-pencil sets and pen stands, I'm sure they'd come in handy for those Christmas cards, but I always thought of them as the classic Bar Mitzvah gift.

This CDV of Thomas C. McMackin was taken about 1865 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. McMackin owned the Washington Hotel in Vicksburg, and he operated one of the finest restaurants in the city from the building. McMackin made a name for himself with the unusual manner in which he informed guests of his menu. He would announce his offerings in a loud voice: one patron wrote that during his visit McMackin proudly announced "Now then, here is a splendid goose! Ladies and gentlemen, don't neglect the goose and apple-sauce! Here's a piece of beef that I can recommend! Upon my honor you will never regret taking a slice of the beef. Oyster-pie! Oyster-pie! Never was a better oyster-pie seen in Vicksburg. Run about, boys, and take orders."
When asked once why he had such an unusual method of announcing his menu, McMackin replied that he had once owned a restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi, that was frequented by members of the state legislature. So many of them were unable to read that he resorted to shouting the menu to let them know what was available. View full size.
