Most of the photos on this site were extracted from reference images (high-resolution tiffs, 20 to 200 megabytes in size) from the Library of Congress research archive. (To query the database click here.) Most were digitized by LOC contractors using a Sinar studio back. They are adjusted by your webmaster for contrast and color in Photoshop before being downsized and turned into the jpegs you see here.

That is some good looking watermelon! I'm not exactly sure who these kids are; but they're in Perry, Oklahoma, and it's the late 1890s or very early 1900s. I found this photo in my collection from my Granny Annie, so at least one of the kids has the last name of Keeler. It reminds me of a song she taught me...

But nothing could be finer than a watermelon rind
So plant a little watermelon on my grave
And let the juice (slurrp)
Trickle through!
