Holes Through the Front TiresThe front solid-rubber tires have transverse holes through them. The purpose of the holes is to allow some "give" to the tire and also, allegedly, to cool the tire.

May I have an extra pillow? In the 1940s my mother-in-law (b. 1923) worked as a nurse in Germany. She described how, in those days, new mothers were required to lie flat as they “recovered” for up to a week in the hospital. After so many mothers died of pneumonia, it was finally determined that the prolonged bed rest actually contributed to the high death rate.

This was taken on the front steps of the Chapel of the Naval Communications Annex (the former Mt. Vernon Academy), 3801 Nebraska Ave, Washington, DC. At the time it was taken, Mom (second row, second from right) was an officer in the WAVES. We know nothing more about this photo, but we assume this was the group of people she worked with. Perhaps one of these people is your (grand) mother or father, and you have one of the other 15 copies that must exist of this photo. If this is the case, I'd love to hear from you.
What did she do, you ask? Well, we're not sure of the details, and we can't ask her, because she died in 1985. But we're pretty sure she was breaking codes, either German or Japanese ones, by machine. She was 22 when she entered the Navy in January 1942, the child of a well-to-do Boston family (her dad was a surgeon, her mother a society lady). She served throughout the war, worked at CIA for a while, got married and then became a housewife and mother. She remained very quiet about this work for the rest of her life, and my brother and I never grilled her about it. Now we wish we had asked a few more questions. View full size.
Mom was very definitely DEcodingShe used to sing us the alphabet backwards, and told us stories about how hot it was in the office she worked in. She was in charge of a number of "girls," and had absolute authority over who could come into her room. This being the case, she allowed all the girls to strip down to their underwear in the DC summer heat.
She taught herself Braille transcription at 50, loved crosswords, and claimed to be able to read 5-level Teletype tape by sight. I never tested that. The only hint about decryption that she gave us, was a comment that she was the one who had to figure out, when a message wouldn't decrypt, which key the cipher clerk might have hit in error as the ship rolled.
As I said, if I knew then what I know now, I would have asked her a lot more questions.
Pre NSAThe Nebraska Ave facility, as I remember from the 1960s, was more of a cipher/code making facility.

Washington DC, c. 1920's. They are using push brooms. Why? I have no clue about this "activity." I imagine that the caretakers were just there in the way as my grandfather took this picture. View full size.
Bull rakes! Those aren't push brooms; they're bull rakes. No kidding. A bull rake "head" is approximately 4" x 4" square with a single row of round wooden teeth (think dowel rods, the diameter of your thumb) protruding 2" to 6" from the bottom. The heavy head is intended to keep the teeth down on the ground, making raking easier. In my long-ago youth I saw bull rakes up to eight feet in width - a man's tool for a man's job. Bull rakes were most commonly used for raking hay (or other grassy crops like wheat) after it had been cut down by hand with a sythe. Look closely at this picture and you will see that some of the hand-mown grass has been bull-raked into long, low rows (called reaps), ready to be picked up with a pitchfork and tossed into a mule-drawn wagon. By the 1920s much of this ancient, labor-intensive drudgery had given way to steam and gasoline engine-powered tractors, with their attached mowers, rakes and balers. So why do we see men using bull rakes in this particular photograph? Well, do you see that stately mansion in the background? Before the days of air conditioning it was necessary for people in the White House to keep the windows open in the hot summer months. (And if you don't think it was hot when this photo was snapped, look at that hazy, humid sky. It sure looks like August in D.C to me!) Anyway, to save the President and his staff from being disturbed by the noise of motorized equipment, the grounds in those days were maintained by hand.

LocationI am fairly certain we are looking across Pennsylvania Avenue NW, where it intersects with 21st & Eye Streets toward what is now the Hotel Lombardy, but which I believe was an apartment building in 1947. The year seems accurate largely because of the 1947 Buick Sedanet prominent left of center, behind the man walking along the sidewalk. The streetcar is already old in this shot, but that series was still running. The Taxi is a 1946 GM model, I believe also a Buick.
