Posted by noelani - 08/13/2011 - 11:15pm -

In 1966 I got the Polaroid "Swinger" for my birthday. It only used black and white film, the pictures were tiny and they looked more like they were taken in the 1930s than the 60s. I soon got tired of spending my hard-earned babysitting money on film for it, but the few I have are kind of amusing!
The suitcase and the things on the bed and surroundings are there because my paternal grandmother had come from Washington (state, not DC) on the train to visit.
The little dark-skinned girl is me, after a summer spent at the pool. Don't know who took the shot. View full size.

How Granddad Spent the War: My paternal grandfather spent WWI as an officer at a camp in Virginia training troops. He was in an Engineering Corps unit and part of the program was training new engineers to dig and maintain trenches. This was shot with a Kodak Vest Pocket Autographic on 127 size roll film. I have the negs he processed (this roll is heavily reticulated) and a few prints along with the camera and a few accessories.
Camp HumphreysSince this was an Army engineering training ground located in Virginia, this is most likely Camp Humphreys, in Fairfax County not far from Washington, D.C. The grounds have changed and grown dramatically in the ensuing years, and the area is now known as Fort Belvoir.
Here's a link to a website describing the historic context of the facility, including a description of the original Camp Humphreys.

Colorized version of this image showing "children in hospital bed with dolls." Washington, D.C., 1931. Harris & Ewing glass negative.
This is what children did before computers, cell phones and social media. We may have made great gains in technology, but in my opinion, we lost a lot.
Precious!I love her upside-down smile. She seems a bit shy and not sure if she wants her picture taken. Her friend is more than willing to sit on a 'girls bed with a bunch of dolls' for the chance to have his picture taken. Imagine what a hospital children's ward was like back in the day.
