Navy off-whites?

Looking at the sailor on the left leaning up against the wall, I'm always mindful that there were no handy washing machines on-board or the kinds of modern detergents that would have kept these sailor's uniforms clean and living up to "navy whites" Sailors' uniforms today must frequently pass inspection by commanding officers.
