From circa 1900, somewhere in North America, comes this glass negative labeled "Lettis. Women on swing." The giant hats are especially fetching. View full size.
That's not anorexia--she's thin, but her cheeks are not drawn. That's a tightly laced corset. Anne Fogarty, author of "Wife Dressing" and a fashion designer, bragged about her 18" waist. Fogarty looked a lot more comfortable in her undergarments than does the lady on the left, though.
That is one very unhealthy looking lady.
That's a pretty high perch for a lady in long skirts to attain unaided. Of course, no gentleman in those days would think of permitting a member of the "weaker sex" to attempt such a feat. Doubtless there's a step ladder just out of frame. And a #10 can of male chauvinism.
