Buffalo, New York, circa 1911. "William McKinley monument, Niagara Square." 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company. View full size.
A forefinger of stone, dreamed by a sculptor, points to the sky.
It says: This way! this way!Four lions snore in stone at the corner of the shaft.
They too are the dream of a sculptor.
They too say: This way! this way!
— Carl Sandburg, Slants at Buffalo
McKinley was assassinated in Buffalo in 1901. Six years later, this monument was placed in front of City Hall rather than at the site, which is now a median strip in a residential area. A bronze plaque was placed there in 1921.
McKinley's native Ohio has two competing memorials, in Niles and Canton.
In Providence RI they even had their own bank and money!
