Degrees of separation
Another relation of C. Bascom Slemp was his grand-nephew George C. Scott, the actor. Born in 1927, Scott was some sort of cousin to young Samuel Cletus. Scott's mother was Helena Agnes Slemp. The "C" in Scott's name is for Campbell, not Cletus.
Minor to Miner
According to the 1977 obituary of S. Cletus Slemp in the Kingsport (Tennessee) News, he became known as "Hoss," worked as a miner, joined the UMWA Local, and for 10 years played the sheriff in "Trail of the Lonesome Pine." At age 67, his trail ended, suitably, at Lonesome Pine Hospital.
C. Bascom Slemp
The C. Bascom Slemp Student Center is at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. The Slemps must have made quite a name for themselves.
