Today, a parking lotSoon after the legalization of casino gambling in the late 1970's, the Chalfonte was torn down and its site became the parking lot for the Resorts International gambling casino.
Nuckyis no doubt down at the surf line, kicking bottles away from the bathers with his two-tone, patent leather shoes.
Unusual FlagI initially thought the flag on the building behind Richards Baths was an old one. It has offset rows of stars as did the 46 star flags used prior to the admission of New Mexico and Arizona in January and February 2012, respectively. I may be wrong, but on close examination it appears to have 48 stars in 6 offset rows of 8 stars each. I've never before seen a 48 star flag that didn't have the 6 rows of 8 stars arranged evenly, like they are on the flag near the beach.

Questa and CuestaThis from Wiki-world
"The postmaster misspelled the name — according to Spanish spelling rules, it should have been spelled Cuesta, which was derived from the Spanish for "ridge" or "slope." Despite the error, the village has kept the name."

Rules of the roadWhat are the rules for multiple tracks -- don't we operate on the right hand side as with vehicular traffic? If the "smoking" engine is eastbound, these trains are operating on the "left" side of the road.
[Whether the engine is going east, west, or to the North Pole, they're driving on the left. Traffic could move in both directions on either track. Which might diverge and take you to entirely different destinations. -Dave]
Left-handedMuch of the Santa Fe across Arizona and New Mexico was operated "left-handed". For those who are really interested in why, this article explains it.
Somewhere in the distance . . .. . . you can still hear the train whistle.
This is as close as I could get so far. It is just west of Ash Fork and you can see the same peak in the distance. The rail line may have moved.

[Drought refugees. - Dave]
What a StretchWould we have loved a stretch of road like this in the late '70s to run our very used and tired muscle cars bought during our high school years. Living in the Boston area even back then there wasn't much running room to open up on.

Firearms not neededThose dogs look like they could take care of a wolf. That coyote didn't have a chance.
Hello Cousin!Ulysses Sheridan Fraze is also my Great-Grandfather. I live in Portales, NM. Who are you? Where did you get this picture. It looks like the old homeplace just north of Longs. Do you know what year it was taken. It may be old enough that they still lived in the 1/2 dugout.
Are you Max Wade??Hi Wade,
Sorry that I am just now responding to your post. I am the granddaughter of Mabel Fraze Neal Ledbetter, the oldest daughter of our great grandfather and Idyll Wilson, and the daughter of Raymon Leon Neal, Mabel's oldest son. My dad lived with Grandpa Fraze in the late 20's early 30's and spent his teen years growing up with with your grandfather who I met at one of the reunions in Dora. My sister Carol and I stayed with Aunt Ruth one year. I scanned many of her old photos and she taught me much about our family history and was my mentor learning about genealogy. I miss her so much.
My father and your grandfather were close during the years my father spent in Portales. There is a photo of the two of them after a particulary large wheat harvest I will try and locate. I grew up hearing stories of your grandfather, Uncle Phillip, Uncle Leslie, Aunt Ruth and Aunt Floy as they were closest in age to my dad. But, particularly your grandfather as he was only a year younger than my dad. It is good to hear from you. If you attended any of the reunions from about 91 through 94 we might have met.
Take care. Your cousin,
Mary Louise Neal

Art Class?Does this statue still stand? Like maybe a headstone, or something? This is the worst example of art I could ever wish to imagine. I thought our "modern art" was bad.
Give The Lady? A Big Hand! Please! It's OK, she's ARMLESS. She wouldn't, and couldn't hurt a fly in her present condition.
I think that this is a statue of a HAND Maiden.
I think they clean this with ARM-OR All.
Ok that's it.
Folk-art goddess?Offhand, I'd guess this is an attempt at a mother-goddess figure, likely one with Aztec roots, quite possibly Tonantzin.

No. 10 Steel DrumThat's an early steel drum over there by the left corner of the building. Probably for oil or maybe kerosene, and known by its ICC Specification, No. 10.
Its shape was designed so that it could be handled with the same equipment as had been used for handling the wooden barrels it replaced, and furthermore its bilge shape added strength and resisted dents.
So how did they manufacture a container of this shape? They welded a steel cylinder (even earlier, riveted side seams were used), rolled in the head at each end, then filled the drum with high pressure water until it swelled to the desired shape!

This photo is part of an album that was purchased at a garage sale in Colorado Springs. Its contents give no clue as to its Colorado connection however it's believed there is a connection to a Ruth E. Swope as her name is often abbreviated as R. Swope or R.E.S. throughout the album. Location most frequently mentioned is Marion, Ohio. View full size.
Could this be Ruth?Per the 1930 Federal Census there was a Ruth E. Swope, age 11, living in Marion, Ohio, which would have put her birth around 1918-1919. She was the daughter of Albert E. Swope (31) and Goldie O. Swope (30). In 1937, the date of the photo, Albert, Goldie and Ruth E. Swope were living at 291 Marion Ave, Marion OH. In 1948 Ruth E. was a secretary at Standard Oil in Marion OH and was still living at 291 Marion Ave with both parents.
The current Social Security Death Index has a Ruth E. Swope, born July 19, 1918, who died at age 90 on July 25, 2008 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The record states that her SSN was issued "in Ohio" before 1951. I also found a record in Colorado indicating that her full name was Ruth Evangeline Swope. There was no indication that she ever married or had children. Her parents both passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albert died in 1980 and Goldie Olive (Cotner) Swope in 1994. Ruth E. had a sister Jean "Petie" (Swope) Nielson who died in 2009 in Nebraska and another sister, June, who preceded her in death.
This information below is from a 1993-1994 directory:
Name: Ruth E Swope
Address:	2471 Yorktown Rd
City: Colorado Springs
State: Colorado
Zip Code:	80907
Phone Number:	719-633-5036
Although not proof positive, with the Ohio & Colorado Springs connection in the SSDI and the age matching the Ruth E. from Marion, it seems likely that this is the Ruth E. Swope mentioned in the photos. Her death in 2008 must have precipitated the images ending-up at a garage sale. Perhaps the above address will help you reconnect the photos to a family member.
