Third of a jarWhen I saw this caption, I couldn't help doing math:
--> 9 months until next season's vegetables (October to July)
  --> 9 x 30 days = 270 days

That seemed like a lot, but then I saw her family of ten in the next photo. She may not have enough.

Shades of O. Winston Link! All it needs is to be taken in the dark with a truckload of flash apparatus. Oh, and a train might be nice, too.
The Rutland RoadThis is most likely the main line of the Rutland Railroad Co. The Rutland Road went into receivership on May 5, 1938, and was still operating that way when the picture was taken. It recovered a bit during WWII but lost most of its stone, milk and passenger traffic in the 1950s and was bought by the State of Vermont in 1963. It is still(?) state-owned as the Vermont Railway Inc., and does see some traffic.
Shaftsbury was just north of the Rutland's connection to Troy via North Bennington, which was one of the more profitable parts of the route because it allowed traffic from Albany and points south to go north to Montreal via Rouse's Point, N.Y., without traversing of the mountains on the south and west side of Lake Champlain via Plattsburg.

Safari jacketThe little guy on his knees in the middle appears to be wearing what I knew as a safari jacket. It has a belt and big buttoned pockets and is short sleeved. It’s freshly pressed and he’s certainly styling.
Balsa Wood ?The blocks seem to have wood grain under the paint. Yet, they must be fairly light, otherwise they would not be safe playthings for children of this age.
Judging from the wear on the corner of the block on the left, I surmise that these are made of Balsa wood, which was still abundant in that era. They might even be solid blocks of Balsa.
Hulloo HollowThe blocks are probably pine or other common softwood, but hollow. You can see the joints on the ends, and what looks like a top come loose in the background.
1942 Balsa would have to come up through sub infested waters from Caribbean or South American plantations, and what there was would go to airplane construction, either 1:1 scale, or flying models

And baby makes threeI almost didn't notice the cotted infant and when I did, the size of its hands took me aback. Looks like he/she could have held the bottle with no trouble if so inclined. I used to prop my littles up with their bottle in the same way, if only to feel for a moment as though I had two hands to use for something other than child care. At any rate Molly looks supremely content, and Me looks pretty pleased too. All hopes that they enjoyed a blissful life together.

Happy Father's Day to all the Shorpy dads out there. And to all our dads who have passed on, we remember you with love and gratitude.
Tobacco TagThat tag hanging out of the Dad's pocket is from a smoking tobacco pouch. Don't judge him too harshly, because smoking was cheaper before the heavy taxes were placed on tobacco.
Also visible in his pocket is a box of Luden's Cough Drops. The formula has probably changed since this photo was made, so it's difficult to comment on whether they were more- or less-effective back then.
I wonder if the boy went on to be enlisted in World War Two?

Powerful statementWe sometimes see memorials placed roadside by mourners, but no "official" markers such as this. Quite a campaign they must have had to promote motor safety.
The vehicle here is a 1930-31 Ford. And it had a rumble seat, shown by the step plate on the fender.
X marks the spotAt least a couple of states still do this today.
The Florida Department of Transportation has an official program to place a memorial marker at the site of a fatality on a state highway - a round white sign. When you're driving by, you can only read the "Drive Safely" wording, but if you're on foot, you can see that it also has the name of the person who died. Sometimes people will put flowers or other things at the base of the sign. I first saw those signs when visiting in 2008, and the program is still available today.
The South Dakota state police have had a similar program since 1979, with a somewhat similar "X" to the one seen here.
In the early 1980s, I remember hearing my grandparents talk about the roadside "shrines" that family and friends would put up in northern Mexico and southern Texas. I don't remember seeing anything like that in Missouri at the time, but by the late 1990s, I started seeing them in Missouri.
South Dakota Has Similar SignsBut they didn't start erecting them until 1979.

Minutes with Venus, years with mercury.Penicillin was still some years off, and this was most likely treatment with an arsenical compound. Shots had to be given weekly for several months. The treatment stopped the spread of infectious syphilis but did not prevent late syphilis. The arsenicals were an improvement over the earlier mercury treatment, but still could have severe side-effects.

Way back when ...... there was such a thing as innocence in children above the age of six. What a happy (if a tad impish) smile this young man had, despite what must have been difficult economic circumstances. I hope he had a life as joyous as his countenance on this winter day.
Breathe deep the gathering gloomJunior looks a little squirrelly from breathing those factory fumes.
Infectious smileI have looked at this photo multiple times and am always struck by the 'happy go lucky' attitude the young man seems to have. Now I realize why I keep coming back to it. Guitar treasuresThis was back in the days when you could find a real guitar treasure in a pawn shop. Even up to the early '60s you could find vintage Gibsons and Martins for next to nothing. But then the folk-music boom happened and they were all gone, snatched up for bargain-basement prices before the hock shop owners understood what they had.

Everything has a reasonIn the Google street view the stairs go straight up from the sidewalk to the front door. In the 1940 photograph it looks like that was the original arrangement, but for some reason the stairs had been rebuilt to the side. The change resulted in a minimal number of fewer stairs that could have been covered either way. At some later date someone decided it was worth the effort and expense to [re]build a straight staircase.
