When Harriet was college age, my fourteen-year-old mother (far left) was in junior high school. Maybe she and her friends also sat on steps at their school, and read books. But here they hiked up their skirts, in unison, in front of my mother’s Brooklyn, NY apartment building, to show some knee. View full size.

My future mother, then four years old, with her flame-red hair set in Shirley Temple curls, poses curtsey style in a party dress on the roof of her Brooklyn, New York apartment home. Whether the photographer whose shadow is at her feet, is her mother or father, I do not know. Scan was made from a print.

This cabinet photo was taken in 1902 in Brooklyn, New York. That's my paternal grandmother, Margaret Dunlap McNeal Wilson, who was born in Newburgh, New York in 1865 and died there in 1950. The toddler is her only child and my father, Robert John Wilson (1901-1986). Sadly, she lost her husband and he, his father, Samuel Hugh Wilson (1855-1903), in April, 1903, after only four days of illness (pneumonia). View full size.

The same three women previously seen on the beach, gather on the dunes with rubber swim caps and bathing suits. The place is probably Lithuania. The date is some time in the 1920s. My best guess at who these people are, is my grandmother’s two older sisters and her mother (center). That would have made them my mother’s aunts and grandmother. Because they lived in Vilna (now named Vilnius) and my mother lived in Brooklyn, New York, she and these relatives never met.

My then-seven-year-old future mother poses on the roof of her apartment building (1027 44th St, Brooklyn NY) for one of her parents to take her picture. She lived in that same apartment from birth until she married my father in 1951.
What is most interesting about the childhood pictures of my mother from this era is that she is always in the same dress. I am quite sure, unlike Little Orphan Annie, she had more than one dress to wear. But somehow the same one was chosen for every photo.

Location is Brooklyn New York City. The event is a birthday party that my approximately eight year old future mother, Arlene (in the light coat) attended.
It was supposed to be a picture of the girls at the party, but somebody’s little brother snuck into the frame.
The coat my mother is wearing might have been a coat her father made for her. He made at least one of her childhood winter coats.
