Mr & Mrs James Granville Stovall (nee Loretta Roan Wayland), who were married at Christmas time, 1899. They lived in Limestone County, Texas but went to Waco, to Jackson Studio, to record their newly married state and some obvious prosperity. This is another portrait taken at the same time as the more traditional pose of the gentleman seated and the lady standing. They are my maternal grandparents.

"New York Window." Glass transparency by Margaret Watkins, exhibited at the 2nd International Salon of Pictorial Photography in 1925. View full size.
Before HitchcockThis picture is reminiscent of the film "Rear Window" and if you live in NYC (or any big city with buildings arranged like this) you cannot help but see into your neighbors' apartments and lives, especially if they keep their windows uncovered.
While visiting relatives in New York for Christmas a few years back, we were unintentionally witnesses to seeing a family directly across the alley from us having their holiday celebration in their beautifully furnished and decorated living quarters since they constantly kept their lights on and their windows uncovered.
We made an effort not to look and felt like snoops, but it would be dark there by 4 or 5 and they'd have their place all lit up. I can see how someone who couldn't leave their house would be drawn into the neighbors' business though and it was not a comfortable feeling. Talk about life in a fishbowl. Seemed like a very nice family though.
I know it is easy to say "Just don't look over there" but with the placement of the buildings it was really unavoidable.
[Until the binoculars broke. - Dave]
Could be worseActually, in New York, this would be advertised as a "view apartment." Some people have a view of a brick wall across the air shaft.
Actually, this view is kinda picturesque -- almost looks like a European village scene.

My father showing my mother how to shoot his Luger pistol when they were a new couple. This is on the road to the Old Town side of Pushaw Lake in Maine with the bog road in the background. This road used to flood every spring. That's dad's 1960 Triumph TR3. Wish he had kept it. View full size.
On the hoodSo many cool and stylish touches to this scene, but I particularly like the bottle on the hood of the car.
What a treat!I had a '60 TR-3, too, but it was getting on in years by then ('75 - '77). I still have the occasional dream where I'm tooling around in it. It was sky blue, which your dad's looks like it may have been (either that or white). I always got a kick out of that hole in the grill for the crank. Thanks for posting!
Hole for the crankI had an MG MGA 1600 Mk II that also had the requisite hole for the crank, but it was in the bumper vs. the grill. It collapsed to about half its length, and was stowed on the front wall of the "boot" in spring fasteners. For as often as the car would not start when cold or damp, the crank was quite handy.
Stylin'They'de be a stylish couple today, with the clothes, the car, the sunglasses. That's a great photo. My dad bought a '55 MG-A in Europe when he was in the service. The government shipped it stateside when his hitch was up, and they drove it even when my older sister was born in '55. When I came along in '57 he had to sell it and get a '55 Chevy. Once he was driving in Minneapolis with the top down and stopped for a red light. A teenager sprawled on the bus stop bench with a cigarette in his mouth looked him and the car over and said "What else did daddy get you for Christmas?" If I can find a photo I'll post it.

May 1943. "Buffalo, New York. Peter Grimm, age 10 (last seen here), delivers for Loblaw's grocery store with his wagon. This was a rainy day with few customers. Sometimes Peter makes as much as $3 on a Saturday. He pays for all his school supplies and much of his clothing. His mother, a 26-year-old widow, is a crane operator at Pratt & Letchworth." Medium format negative by Marjory Collins for the Office of War Information. View full size.
Peter was quite the mover and groover. This is the first job my friend Peggy and I did in the 60's, in Montreal, Canada. We were also 10 yrs old and on a good day we could make 2$ between us. Peter must have had better patter in order to loosen those purse strings.
And Toys for BoysThe Pratt brothers and William Letchworth formed the Buffalo Malleable Iron Works in 1836. Their iron formula produced durable products for carriages, saddlery, farm equipment and later railroad steam engine wheels and running gear. In 1889 they hired George Crosby to design cast iron toys to promote their malleable iron's flexibility. Now they are most remembered for the finely detailed and painted "malleable iron" indestructible horse drawn toys that are at top of toy collectors' lists. From the complete fireman sets with all the apparatus and even an operating burning building to save a fair maiden, their iron formula greatly reduced the brittleness of cast iron that was a problem for the broken legs on horses and firemen's arms on Christmas Day.

Heroines AllI would just like to say hear! hear! to the one-roomed school teachers. I married into a teaching family of three generations and it is all thanks to my mother-in-law who taught in a one-room school in Cynthiana, Kentucky in the late 20s. My wife seen here, became a school teacher because of the wonderful influence my mother-in-law had on her. Then my wife's niece followed in her aunt's footsteps and also became a teacher.
They are truly heroines no matter how many rooms the school has.

Even though my cousin Kathy gave this photo the title "Immigrant children meet Santa for the first time," we were not immigrants, even though it looks like we had just escaped war-torn Warsaw. And we had met Santa many times, despite brother Billy's concerned expression. Taken in 1959 at the Ford Rotunda, Detroit, MI. View full size.
Bucky Fuller and the RotundaMany a home in the tri-county area have photos with Santa at the Rotunda. I never got to see it; it burned down when I was a toddler, although my parents told me it was fantastic. Small consolation to a kid.
Ford Rotunda in KodachromeFrom my collection of old Kodachrome slides, here is an exterior view and an interior view of the Ford Rotunda. Santa wouldn't be making his 1955 appearance at the Rotunda for another 5 months. The sign in front of the 1956 Ford Fairlane Station Wagon in the interior shot reads, "MICHIGAN leads the nation in the number of state parks and prepared campsites available to the public!"
Twilight ZoneLooks like Art Carney's portrayal of Santa in The Night of the Meek from the Zone.
Remembering that day. It's funny that I remember that day so well. I remember that the LAST place I wanted to be was at the Ford Rotunda Christmas display. I wanted to be home, because the Harlem Globetrotters were going to be on ABC's Wide World of Sports that day, and I wanted to watch. Sadly, we returned home just as the program was ending.

MidgetsTalk about pint sized.
My Galvanized FriendIt started life in the early 30's as my mother's original washing machine.
In the later 30's it went into drydock when my father bought a washing machine on time from Gassinger's.
In the early 40's it became my bathtub after I grew too big for the kitchen sink plus it was also my kiddie pool during hot summers in Baltimore.
By the early 50's I could no longer sit in it but it still worked fine for my toy boats on muggy August days and as a wash tub for my pet Brownie, a mutt of no pedigree but full of love for all.
In the late fifties it was filled with ice and soda for my teenage parties in our cellar.
By the 60's I had learned my way around a grill so it was put on duty as the holder of ice and quarter kegs for my backyard rib BBQs and crab feasts.
By the 70's it had developed an unrepairable hole so I filled it with dirt and planted a small pine tree in it. For the next few years it was always the center of attraction at Christmas time as the only festively lit tree in our Baltimore row house alley.
In the 80's I moved away and never saw it again but I still have fond memories of my galvanized friend.

Wish we still did this. When I was much younger, my father used to take us out to Belle Isle to Ice Skate and to see the Ice fountain. They would lean Christmas trees against a pole that had a water pipe and spray head (as far as I remember). The pole, pipe and spray head are all still there, but they haven't created an ice fountain in who knows how many years. You would think this year they would have done it again given the harsh winter we had.
Stunning!I've been staring at the picture for five minutes straight. If I'd been there, that day, I could have stared at it for hours! I've seen fountains frozen up like that, in Europe. Especially if the sun comes out, there really isn't anything more beautiful!

The RailbikersI have written a story about a couple guys like this who converted their bicycles to go on an abandoned railway. They headed west in search of adventures!
This picture look more as if it were taken when I was around the age of these boys -- in the mid-1960s. The tires on these bikes aren't the ultra-fat ones I think of from the 40s and 50s. (I got a Schwinn Typhoon for Christmas 1965 when I was 9. I had it restored a few years ago, and it is still at Mom's house.)
Days gone by...beautiful.When kids were not micro-managed, and they could actually do a trip like the one you describe, sans adults!
Railbikers response510Russ
I appreciate your comment on my submitted photo. I can relate to your story about an abandoned railway, as in late 1950s Bedford, there was an abandoned rail line that led out of town, to an abandoned quarry...
I remember exploring down that line with my buds as kids, as in "Stand By Me".
It was really a remarkable, and never to be repeated, time to be youngsters.
But yes, this picture is from the late 50s. These bicycles were relatively new CCM 3-speeds, with British Stermy-Archer rear hubs. By this time, balloon tires were falling out of fashion.
I had, as a kid, a "Leave It To Beaver" experience in 1950s Bedford, Quebec, for which I am very grateful.

Dining Room LampI think every household in the 1960s must have had a dining room lamp like that one. They typically had a retractable length of wire contained in a sheet metal ball (visible in the shadow of flash on the wall) that would allow you to pull the lamp all the way down to the table or most of the way up to the ceiling.
Space Odyssey?I think the Spaceman Spiff was in jest(?). So I wondered what the inspiration for them actually was. The movie 2001 was two years past in 1970 so that's not likely.
They seem NASA-ish in styling, so maybe they were inspired by the moon walk just a year before.
Pass the Space Food Sticks, I'm hungry!
