Placer County Courthouse

This is a photograph of the Placer County Courthouse looking down what is now Lincoln Way in Auburn, California. This photograph, which is in our collection (Placer County Museums), did not have a date. We have an estimated date range of late teens to early twenties, but I am hoping an auto enthusiast out there can help us narrow this somewhat. View full size.

Steam Shovel: 1921

Thornton, Illinois limestone quarry circa 1921. My wife's grandfather was a Serbian immigrant who worked in this quarry his whole life. His home and family lived in a home right next to the quarry so he truly was able to walk to his work. This quarry is still in operation today and now covers many square miles. View full size.

Birthday Posse: 1953

Larkspur, California, January 7, 1953. A photo of me I didn't know existed until a few days ago. I'm the second cowboy hat from the left at my best friend's 6th birthday party; I'd turned 6 the previous August. It's one of the rare childhood events that I've always carried a memory of; specifically: I insisted on leaving the party early so I could get home in time to watch "Time for Beany" on TV. My brother - whose hat that had been - came over and walked me home. My other classmates are the kid with the giant glasses on his head and the cowgirl behind the wide-eyed boy at right; I met up with her at our high school Class of '64 50th reunion last September. Others are mostly relatives, including June Cleaver his aunt setting up pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. I gotta say, for a kid with a birthday so close to Christmas, it looks like my friend made out like a bandit.

Many thanks to his sister, the little girl at my side, for getting this negative to me to scan. View full size.

Polychrome Pulps: 1942

This is my colorized version of this Shorpy original. I used a number of sources within the vintage magazine collecting community online to find color images of all of the covers included. All covers are colored accurately with the exception of "Super Sports" which I could not find. I was able to find a number of other issues of "Super Sports" but not the one featured in the picture. I used those as references in an effort to guess at the colors as accurately as possible. View full size.

Parade Biker: 1959

June 24, 1959. My brother posed proudly with our cocker Cindy in front of his decked-out bike for the annual St. Jean Baptiste Parade in Bedford, Quebec. It was ironic that an English kid led the bike parade celebrating French Quebec's "national" day of celebration. View full size.

Quebec Winter: 1958

Same location as the Hula Hoop photo - our driveway - with Dad and me in winter 1958. We lived literally on the edge of town, as seen by the background countryside and woods. That was our playground, summer and winter, for my friends and me, the best childhood anyone could ask for. No helicopter parenting, no electronic distractions. We never felt we were missing something. A Google Earth view shows that countryside is now subdivision. View full size.

Hoop-De-Do: 1958

This is me in the summer of 1958 in Bedford Quebec, during that year's Hula Hoop craze. As you can see, Mom sure did dress me in a weird way -- buttoned-up collar, full cuffs and elastic band pants? Our cocker spaniel Cindy is in the background. View full size.

Lensmen: 1952

Detroit Edison Photographic Department at Christmas 1952. Some of the best photographers in Detroit. Each photographer was an expert, be it out in the field or in the darkroom. As a want-to-be photographer I learned about all aspects of photography among the best who served in World War 2 as photographers. View full size.
