October 1976, somewhere in England. Holding a piece of good English cheese, I wait for the self-timer to snap, sitting with my friends on the bonnet of our for-hire Volkswagen Golf. Kodachrome slide via Konica Autoreflex T. View full size.
July 1967, Kings Canyon National Park, California. My mother, brother and father around the campfire, photographed in Kodachrome by the light of a Coleman lantern. Bonus: antique enameled coffeepot. View full size.
1975, Crater Lake, Oregon. A friend, my brother and me, captured during the golden hour. I shot this on 35mm Kodak Vericolor via self-timer. Lighting is everything, isn't it? View full size.
Summer 1967. Just think how much more exciting this shot of my mother, father and brother enjoying a Kodachrome vista of the Sierra Nevada would be if, instead of our sedate 1966 Rambler, we had a red 1960 Chevy wagon. View full size.
"Foster & Reynolds, exterior." The National Remembrance Shop in Washington circa 1924. View full size. National Photo Company Collection glass negative.
I feel this image is appropriate for my first official Shorpy "Jump the Shark" submission. Me, my father and brother (in the car) at Knott's Berry Farm, August 1964. Shot on 35mm Montgomery Ward brand slide film. View full size.
This is me on a swing at a motel in either Maryland or Delaware sometime in the mid-1970s. It was likely taken by my father, whose shadow appears in the photo, too. I really like this photo -- the sun, the motel architecture (is that an oxymoron?), the photographer's shadow, and especially the red and white pool umbrella. Doesn't it all just scream 1970s? I don't remember me and my folks accidentally stumbling through a reducing ray in July 1960, so this must be our visit to Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California.
My brother's 35mm Ektachrome slide. View full size.
Summer 1962. We stopped in the historic Gold Rush town of Mariposa, California on our way to Yosemite. My mother, grandmother and father are standing at the corner of the Schlageter Hotel, built around 1859-1866, while I'm across the street taking this shot on 127 Kodacolor with my Brownie Starmite. I was about to turn 16, and later that year I finally graduated to 35mm. Neither the 1959 Ford wagon or the fabulous 1957 Oldsmobile hardtop belonged to us. Our 1956 Rambler wagon is parked out of sight somewhere. View full size.
September 1937. Concord, Massachusetts. "At Walden Pond, haunt of Thoreau." View full size. 35mm nitrate negative by Edwin Locke for the Resettlement Administration. We wonder where Thoreau rented his swimsuits back in the day.
