What do you do on a warm summer's day, when Mom has just had you cut the stalks for one of her mouth-puckering rhubarb pies? Simple, you make hats of the leaves. (Then you look simple, too.) This is my immediate family, taken in 1955, probably in the fall. George (baby) was in his first year and I was two. This 35mm Kodachrome slide was taken with us perched upon what we called "The Cave." This was the place where food was stored year round. The temperature remained constantly low and acted as a natural refrigerator. On the farm near Blandinsville, Illinois. View full size.

This was taken in 1960 aboard the USS Orleck just after we had finished refueling from the ship in the background. The non-regulation helmets were hand-painted by the individuals wearing them and were tolerated by the officers on board. The most appropriate is probably the one with the greasy hand as this was a messy task. Note the soiled life jackets and the hands on the sailor in the foreground. I took the picture using 35mm Kodachrome slide film. The camera was a Taron Rangefinder which was a pretty good shooter to own on a sailor's salary.
The ship survived being scrapped and is now a museum in Lake Charles, LA. View full size.

Crossroads of America: 1963

Chicago's status as the crossroads of commerce in America is well known.
This busy railroad crossing on the city's South side served to personify that fact.
I took this photo at the Ash Street crossing adjacent to the now defunct Campbell's Soup factory, kind of in the spirit of Jack Delano many years before. Over the years I have come to realize that crossings such as these are a maintenance nightmare for their owners because the constant pounding of heavy rail cars tends to wear out the rail heads.
Today the various railroads are engaged in a gradual replacement of crossings like this with "flying junctions" similar to expressway interchanges. It is known as "Operation Create." The first of these was completed at Englewood just last year. 35 mm Kodachrome transparency taken September 2, 1963 by William D. Volkmer.

Ciudad Universitaria (University City), Mexico is the main campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Located in the southern part of Mexico city its construction on a solidified lava bed was finished in 1954.
My Aunt Lee is on the right (I'm assuming that Aunt Emmy took this picture since that is not her by Lee's side). My Aunts, at ages 38 and 40, were on their first international trip. At the time of this trip they had worked at least 15 years as executive secretaries at GM divisions in Anderson, Indiana.
The mural pictured here is recognized as the largest mural in the world, covering all sides of the Library. The mural is based on Aztec and Spanish motifs and UNAM's coat of arms. The artist was Juan O'Gorman, a painter and architect.

I took my camera and tripod to work one night in 1974 as a Vancouver trolley bus driver. This is a photo at the old (Chilco Street) Stanley Park Bus Loop with a 1948 Brill trolleybus.
In the background, and through the bus, you can see the Stuart Building, which was illegally demolished at 4 am a few years later. To obtain this shot, the camera was placed on the tripod, and the shutter was locked open. With all the bus lights turned off, the bus was originally parked at least a bus length further back.
The reason for all the sparks is this was a passing wire in the loop that was rarely used, and so the metal curve segments on the trolley wires oxidise, and if you power through them you get some great sparks. I pulled the bus forward, created the sparks, and parked it, turned on all the bus lights, and continued the exposure long enough to capture the image of the bus. But not for too long, as I wanted the Stuart Building to show through. So it was a single exposure, although it looks like a "double exposure". I used a Konica Autoreflex 2 camera with Kodachrome film. The loop had incandescent street lights.

This is my uncle, aunt, and cousins, when they lived outside Los Angeles. Some time after this photo was taken my aunt contracted polio and was eventually confined to an iron lung. We often glamorize the "good old days", but sometimes forget the other side of the story. In any event, everyone was dressed up and looking pretty spiffy when this photo was taken, perhaps it was on a Sunday after church. Taken on Kodachrome. View full size.
